Prediction 2021: Repurposing Office Space
Starting in 2021, pandemic abandoned office space will be repurposed to indoor farming and food production.
The pandemic has had a significant impact on commercial building usage. Shuttered businesses, reduced workforces, working from home have emptied office spaces, especially in cities. It’s very likely that much of that space will not be refilled when the pandemic abates. Nature abhors a vacuum and it’s nature that will be filling empty buildings with indoor farming and food production. Localizing food production in empty buildings will mitigate growing food insecurity issues such as food deserts, agricultural disasters and the environmental impact of big agriculture. It will also bring jobs to urban centers that have been most affected by the exodus of information workers.
By 2023, expect an increase in indoor farm planning and incentives in most major cities. Agricultural subsidies for urban farming and food production, an accelerated innovation in indoor and vertical farming technology.
